I always believe that the most powerful portraits are often the simplest. Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming film director Vicky Jewson into my lovely studio here in Cornwall for a clean, professional headshot session. Vicky arrived with her lovely husband Rupert and it was clear as soon as I met them that we would get on and we chatted over tea about her film "Pretty Lethal" which is launched today on Amazon Prime. It's an action-packed thriller where five ballerinas have to fight themselves out of a sticky situation.

I always enjoy photographing someone who spends so much of their time behind the camera, it’s a chance to turn the lens back on the storyteller.

A Natural, Minimal Brief

The brief was refreshingly straightforward: a simple headshot. No elaborate styling, no distractions, just a strong,authentic portrait that reflects Vicky’s personality and presence as a filmmaker. These kinds of sessions are always a favourite of mine, as they allow the focus to remain entirely on the individual.

Working with natural expressions and subtle lighting, we created a series of images that feel both confident and approachable, perfect for a director whose work speaks for itself.

From Studio to Screen

Vicky Jewson is known for her work on the upcoming film "Pretty Lethal", starring Uma Thurman. It’s always exciting to photograph creatives who are actively shaping the industry that they are in, and this film is certainly one to watch. It’s always inspiring to what someone is working on during a shoot, I like being around passionate, creative people.

A Relaxed Studio Experience

The session itself was calm and enjoyable, with Vicky bringing a great energy into the studio. My aim is always to create a relaxed environment where clients can feel at ease, because that’s when the best portraits happen. The studio itself is designed to feel welcoming and unhurried, so it never feels like a rushed appointment, more like a creative collaboration. It was fun.
